    Merseyside vs. Manchester dominates the weekend action – Premier League Preview

    Ahead of another busy weekend of Premier League fixtures, we’re here to preview the best of the upcoming action in England’s top flight.


    After both FA Cup and League Cup commitments for the Premier League’s 20 clubs in the last week – four sides have played in both – Premier League football returns this weekend.

    Liverpool have drawn 0-0 at home to Plymouth Argyle and lost 1-0 at Southampton, but Sunday’s visit to Man United is another level of importance altogether.

     

    It is one of 10 top-flight matches to look forward to – here’s a look at some of the standout action in the coming days.

     

     

    Liverpool vs. United: The latest chapter

    We don’t normally focus too much on Liverpool in these Premier League previews – enough is written about them in other articles – but it is different when United are their opponents.

    This remains the biggest game in English football, and while some of the recent fixtures between the pair haven’t been too crucial, this one really is.

    Liverpool are five points clear of their rivals, and victory at Old Trafford would not only keep them well clear of them, but it would also keep their title hopes strongly alive.

    On the flip side, defeat could be catastrophic, with Chelsea likely to pick up three points on Saturday and United suddenly only two behind.

    Should that happen, a place in the top-four would suddenly look a little iffy.

    United are flying, having won nine on the bounce in all competitions (mostly against an absolute load of dross), but the Reds must show the belief and quality that has been lacking a little of late. It is a very tough one to call.

     

    Champions hope to thwart title favourites

    Chelsea’s incredible winning run fortunately came to end at Tottenham last week, with the Blues’ 2-0 defeat giving their rivals at the top some hope.

    A win would have put them eight points clear, but the hope is that the loss has put some slight doubt into the back of their minds.

    On Saturday evening, Antonio Conte’s side visit champions Leicester City, in what has the potential to be an intriguing match-up.

    For all the Foxes’ struggles this season, they showed what they are still capable of against Man City last month, and will hope for more of the same this weekend.

    Chelsea remain the strong title favourites, however, and three points for them at the King Power Stadium would really crank up the pressure on Liverpool at Old Trafford.

     

    Can Everton do the Reds a favour?

    We all know that Liverpool can never rely on Everton to help them out – their pathetic showing at home to Man City in 2014 is proof of that – but we can at least hope that that changes one day.

    Ronald Koeman’s inconsistent outfit welcome City to Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon, in the kind of game that really could go either way.

    City are the kind of side who could go quietly under the radar without playing well, putting together a winning streak before you know it.

    Liverpool would appreciate their Merseyside rivals nipping that in the bud nice and quickly, both in terms of the title race and top-four battle.

    You never quite know what you’re going to get from either team, but City have to be considered favourites, due to their attacking quality. The first goal feels crucial.

    Everton still don’t look right under Koeman, with their FA Cup exit to Leicester another low point, and Pep Guardiola will fancy his side’s chances.

     

    Winnable games for north London duo

    The battle between the top six sides could end up being the most fascinating of the Premier League era, and Spurs and Arsenal are right in the mix.

    The north London adversaries will both believe a top-four finish is the bare minimum in 2016/17, and this weekend offers a great chance to seal three more points apiece.

    Spurs host West Brom on Saturday lunchtime, and although the Baggies are proving typically tough to face under Tony Pulis, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are far more resilient and ruthless these days.

    Dele Alli is in sparkling form, and if they can just get Harry Kane back to his best, there is no reason why they can’t be in the title shake-up come May.

    Arsenal don’t look wholly convincing, by any means, with their 3-3 draw at Bournemouth summing up how unpredictable they are, but they just keep plugging away.

    Saturday trip’s to Swansea City is a must-win game if they want to stay in touch with Chelsea, and they should get the better of the Swans with relative ease.

    Liverpool could do with the London duo slipping up this weekend, but that may be wishful thinking.

  • Relocation

    A number of changes have been made. We set out below a summary of some of the key areas that have undergone amendments:

    Probationary periods

    The probationary period can now be extended up to 180 days. An employee however may not be placed on probation more than once by the same employer, unless the employee is placed in a new position or was not engaged by the same employer in the last six months.

    Relocation

    The employee’s written consent is required before any geographic relocation which would entail the relocation of the employee’s place of residence. Temporary relocations of up to 30 days per annum are permitted however.

    Notice periods

    Open-ended contracts are now subject to 60 days’ termination notice for employees who are engaged and paid on a monthly basis. A minimum of 30 days’ is required for those engaged on other terms.

    Leave

    Employees serving their notice periods are now entitled to eight fully paid hours per week or a full day per week to look for alternative employment.

    Compensation

    Unless the parties agree in advance and in writing on the amount of compensation payable upon termination without “valid reason”, the party terminating the contract will have to compensate the other with either:

    • A wage equivalent to 15 days for each completed year of employment, in indefinite term contracts.
    • The balance of wages for the remaining employment term, in the fixed-term contract.

    In each case, the minimum amount of compensation may not be less than two months’ wages.

    Unauthorised leave

    Employers may terminate the employee’s contract without compensation in the event the employee is absent from work “without a valid reason” for either:

    • More than 30 non-consecutive days a year.
    • For more than 15 consecutive days within a year.

    In the first case, a prior written warning must be delivered to the employee after 20 days of non-consecutive absence and in the second case the warning must be delivered after 10 days of consecutive absence.

    Renewability

    Fixed term contracts that are renewed more than three times (or upon the employee accruing four years of continuous service, whichever comes sooner) will automatically convert into indefinite term contracts.

    References and sanctions

    Departing employees have the right to request upon termination a service certificate setting out details of their employment. The employers are prohibited from giving negative references which could hinder the employee’s chances of securing alternative employment.

    Employers are also required to maintain written records of any fines imposed on their employees. The information required includes the worker’s name, their remuneration, the date, the reason for and the amount of the fine imposed.

    Leave

    A number of amendments increasing short-term leave have been introduced.

    • Maternity leave: female workers are now entitled to 10 weeks’ maternity leave fully paid, to commence maximum four weeks before the expected date of delivery. The leave can also be extended for an additional month on an unpaid basis.
    • Marriage and bereavement leave: leave due to marriage or death of an immediate family member has been increased from three to five days.
    • Paternity leave: leave has been increased from one to three days.

    Training requirements

    An employer with more than 50 employees is required to provide training to at least 12% of its total number of Saudi Arabian employees. Employer must be able to provide documentary evidence of the training.

    Working hours

    Employees’ daily working hour limit has been increased from 11 to 12 hours provided that the employees do not work for more than five consecutive hours.

    Company policies and employment contracts

    All companies are now required to establish written internal by-laws as per the standard form applied by the Ministry of Labor. Companies are also required to follow the form of employment contract prepared by the Ministry of Labor.

    Work injuries

    Employers must provide financial aid to employees temporarily unable to work due to injuries suffered at work at the rate of 75% of the employees’ wage. In the event of non-recovery, the employer will need to compensate the employee for such injury.

    Enforcement

    The Ministry of Labor inspectors are no longer authorised to close businesses “on the spot”. All potential violations must be reviewed by the Ministry of Labor.

    Depending on its severity, any violation of the law may be subject to monetary fines or business suspension or closure.

    Finally, the new amendments provide the Minister of Labor with a discretionary right to grant a financial reward of up to 25% of the total amount of collected penalties against any information that assists inspectors or others in revealing violations of the Labor Law.

    Conclusion

    As well as a general increase in rights of employees, the amendments were intended to narrow the gap between employment in the private and public sectors. An increase in Saudization and rights of employers to manage employees, particularly when dealing with employment termination, have been well received.

    It remains to be seen as to how the Ministry of Labor will enforce these new laws and carry out its terms in practice, however the transparency these amendments provide to both employees and employers no doubt offer a better foundation for working relationships going forward.

    Senge Tera and Kality 40 60 Condominium to be transferred to Commercial Bank of Ethiopia For LotteryAround 1,292 40/60 condominium units will be handed over to Commercial Bank of Ethiopia which will handle the lottery process. The price for each condominium unit will increase by an unknown amount. According to Addis Ababa housing enterprise official Ato Yidnekachew Walelign, the 40/60 condominium lottery will be handled by Commercial Bank of Ethiopia.

    When the 40/60 condominium housing schemes began in 2013, the price for 1, 2 and 3 bedroom condominium units was set at 162,000, 250,000 and 386,000 birr respectively. However, due to inflation of construction material, labor costs and design changes, the prices had to be increased to an unspecified amount.

    It is believed that the bank will hold a lottery for 1,292 condominium units located at Senga tera and Kality crown sites.

    Currently, 38,709 condominium units are under construction on 12 sites around Addis Abeba. However, most of the projects are behind schedule which has brought serious backlash from people saving money. 

    160,000 people registered for the 40/60 condominium scheme on 2013 and around 154,000 are saving money each month. Out of these people, an estimated 13,000 people have paid the full amount (100%) while an estimated 29,000 people have paid (40%) of the total cost.

    Ethiopian foreign minister Workenh Gebeyehu said in an interview published on Monday on the Saudi Arabian Middle East news website that his government is positively cooperating with Egyptian counterparts to maintain friendly relations, though it awaits an official response from Egypt to a request by Ethiopia that Cairo stop the activity of Ethiopian opposition groups within Egypt.

     

    "We informed our Egyptian friends about the activities of some hostile groups that are working against the Ethiopian government in Cairo, and we requested that Egypt stop the activities of these hostile groups", Gebeyehu stated.

    Ethiopian PM Hailemariam Desalegn said on Thursday in an interview with the Qatari Al-Jazeera news channel that his country demanded that the Egyptian government take clear action against "terrorist organisations" that are receiving support from "some Egyptian bodies" in Cairo.

    In October, Ethiopia's communication minister Getachew Reda accused Egypt of financing and training "armed groups" operating in Ethiopia.

    Reda's claims came amid demonstrations against an Ethiopian government plan to expand the boundaries of the capital Addis Ababa into the territory of the Oromo ethnic group. 

    Egypt's foreign ministry said at the time that Cairo completely respects Ethiopian sovereignty and non-interference in the country's internal affairs. 

    Ethiopian Right groups say that 500 civilians were killed during the demonstrations, with the Ethiopian government declaring a six-month state of emergency.  

    In 2015, Egypt dismissed Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome's accusations that Egyptian “elements” are supporting armed opposition groups in his country with the aim of preventing Ethiopia from building the Ethiopian Grand Renaissance Dam, which Cairo fears could reduce its share of Nile water.

    In March 2015, Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan signed a trilateral declaration of principles that guarantees that all parties will take steps to ensure the dam will not harm the interests of all parties concerned.

  • NEWS | Kenyan Muslims shield Christians in Mandera bus attack

    A group of Kenyan Muslims travelling on a bus ambushed by Islamist gunmen protected Christian passengers by refusing to be split into groups, according to eyewitnesses.
    They told the militants "to kill them together or leave them alone", a local governor told Kenyan media.
    At least two people were killed in the attack, near the north-eastern village of El Wak on the Somali border.
    The Somali based al-Shabab group says it carried out the attack.
    The group often carries out attacks in Kenya's north-east.

    Filipino boxer and lawmaker Manny Pacquiao has always been known for his charitable ways and the 37-year-old proved it once again when he gave 150 families new homes just a week before his 37th birthday.

    Pacquiao shelled out about PhP28.5 million (roughly $600,000 after currency conversion) for the project dubbed as the "Pacman Village." The lucky recipients were the ones over at Bales Village, Maasim in the province of Saranggani, Philippines.

  • Man killed after his random act of kindness

     

    Their only encounter was brief, about five minutes in a grocery store on Nov. 10. But what happened in those moments, and the tragedy that followed, put the Carlsbad woman on a quest to honor the 28-year-old whose kindness left a deep impression.

    “It is beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time,” she said Wednesday. “We are trying to turn something sad into something really good.”

    The late evening trip to Trader Joe’s in Oceanside had been stressful for Knighten, her fussy 5-month-old in tow as she navigated a market she had not been to before. The trip to the register was worse: A $200 tab, her debit card at home, her credit card declined thanks to an anti-fraud lock, and, of course, a crying baby.

    Knighten began fumbling for her phone to call the bank, as a long line stretched behind her, when a young man stepped up and asked if he could cover the cost. She first refused, but he asked again. Knighten said when she looked into his eyes, she realized that he truly wanted to help.

    “It just felt like this huge hug, this great big bear hug,” the married mother of two said.

    The man said he wanted nothing in return, he simply wanted her to do the same for someone else.

    She agreed, but asked his name and where he worked, thinking that somehow she still wanted to acknowledge his selfless act.

    So more than a week later, when she finally had a moment, Knighten called Jackson’s boss at LA Fitness, to say how kind he had been, and perhaps bring him a gift.

    The gym manager began crying, Knighten said. Days earlier, Jackson had died in a car accident — his Ford Fiesta struck a tree along a shopping complex at the end of West Vista Way, not far from the store where Knighten met him. Two passengers in the car were hurt, but have since been released from the hospital.

    The crash happened less than 24 hours after Jackson had paid her grocery bill.

    After a sleepness night, Knighten took to Facebook: “I still cannot believe it. I thought for sure I would get the chance to see him again, give him a hug and thank him at least once more in person. Now I won't get that chance, but more importantly no one else will get the chance to meet him. And that breaks my heart.”

    The response from friends and family to her Nov. 20 post, she said, “was incredible. People saying they were going to pay it forward in Scotland, in Wisconsin, in Australia. Overwhelming. It was overwhelming.”

    As a fitness trainer, Jackson didn’t make much, and $200 was a lot of money to lay out for a stranger. But his mother, LeeAnn Krymow, said Wednesday that such kindness defined her son.

    She remembers one day under a sweltering desert sun — Jackson grew up in Phoenix — when mother and son stopped to get cold bottled water. At a stop light a block later, he suddenly jumped out of the car, ran over to a panhandler and handed his unopened bottle to the stranger.

    “I knew my boy was like this,” Krymow said. “He loved to be kind. He was just a really special kid. So cute, so intelligent, so talented, an accomplished musician. You wonder why these things happen.”

    She said he had attended Liberty University in Virginia, and later moved to San Diego County to be with his longtime girlfriend, whom he planned to marry.

    Knighten, who is from Canada and had recently returned to North County after a lengthy visit home, said she hopes to spread the word of what she calls “Matthew’s legacy.” She has started a Facebook page and Twitter account under just that name: “Matthews legacy.”

    Krymow said she is touched to know that her son will be remembered for his good works.

    “There has got to be some good to come of this,” she said. “He would be happy to know that other people are learning from his example.”

    There’s a postscript to this story: Jackson’s sister and brother-in-law, who is a youth pastor, drove out to Carlsbad from their home in the Phoenix suburb of Gilbert, to attend the memorial service. Along the way, they stopped with their four young kids for a meal in Yuma. When they went to pay the bill, they got a surprise: someone had already paid their bill.

    It was a random act of kindness from a stranger.

  • Haile Gebrselassie has announced his retirement from competitive running.


    The 42-year-old Ethiopian confirmed his decision after finishing 16th in the Great Manchester Run on Sunday.

    It brings to an end a 25-year career in which he claimed two Olympic gold medals, eight World Championship victories and set 27 world records.

    "I'm retiring from competitive running, not from running. You cannot stop running, this is my life," he told BBC Sport.

    Gebrselassie remains the world record holder at 20,000m and the one-hour race.
